MAKING is a tool to inspire designers and creators to make better choices in the materials they use. We know that every decision a designer makes in the product creation process has an impact on the environment. But given the range of options that exist, making informed choices can be a challenge. That is why MAKING matters.

Powered by the Nike Materials Sustainability Index, MAKING provides the information to enable users to make real-time, predictive decisions. Whether you are a designer, a product creator, or just interested in the impacts of the materials you use, MAKING will help you make better choices.

How it Works

Nike has been investing in ways to design more sustainable products for years. In order to best support Nike designers, the company spent seven years creating the Nike Materials Sustainability Index (MSI). Nike MSI was created using the best publicly disclosed information related to the environmental impacts of materials.

Now Nike is putting this information in the hands of makers in order to inspire better choices that support more sustainable design.

MAKING includes data from Nike MSI on widely used materials and allows users to rank them based on four key impact areas: Chemistry, Energy/Greenhouse Gas, Water/Land, and Physical Waste. The materials in MAKING are widely used in apparel, footwear and home goods.

Each impact is weighted based on specific indicators, and each material included in MAKING is assigned a base material score. Materials are rated out of a possible 50 points with higher scores indicating a more positive environmental impact. More information on Nike MSI and the scoring mechanism used can be found by visiting

MAKING is an easy-to-use reference guide to compare the impacts of materials. There are many other opportunities to design better products, and we know that MAKING is just the beginning of your journey. The choice is in your hands.

I loved this app bc it helped me make better purchases. But it stopped working and randomly shuts down now. I deleted and reinstalled it several times and each time had the same result. Please fix the bug so we can use this fantastic app again!
What an innovative and helpful idea!

I'm so glad that Nike has come out with an app like this. As far as I know, it's the only one of its kind. It's very helpful to have a side-by-side comparison of the different fabrics and other materials that are put into items we wear and use everyday. It's definitely opened my eyes to a part of the clothing industry I previously had little knowledge about.
Lot to learn

Thank you Nike for creating this app and helping other designers and makers to source sustainable materials. As a design company founder I truly appreciate that you not only took on this effort for yourselves but that you chose to share it with the rest of us. We only have one planet and I agree with your statements that the environmental impact analysis should start with the designer.

This app is great for any Textile Designer/enthusiast interested in fibers and how they sustainably relate to each other. Perfect for the industry, defiantly provides info relevant to this vastly changing Eco world! Love the fiber info blurb on each material. SO PUMPED TO REFERENCE THIS. Cheers Nike
Useless (but pretty)

How inefficient a use of energy, man hours, or other resources does the creation of this app represent, Nike? Make an infographic!
This is a great step in the right direction

Great to see nike doing the right thing. Not easy to make changes with a company as large as nike but at least they are headed in the right direction. Save our planet!!
I love this app, but...

I just wish there was an option or something to indicate which materials can be considered vegan. Other than that, it's a really nice app :)
